Olivier Messiaen – “Quartet for the End of Time”

Messiaen wrote Quatour pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) while in a German prisoner-of-war camp during WWII. In 1941, the piece was premiered in the camp to an audience of guards and prisoners, using the few broken instruments that were available. Later in his life, Messiaen recalled: “never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.”
